People often justify to themselves that withholding information is not the same as lying. In fact, it very much can be.

Valuing privacy is fine. There is no reason why we should share things we don't feel comfortable sharing. This is an entirely separate issue from withholding important information in order to deceive/control/manipulate another person. That is a form of lying.
