That said, the daughter should also be spoken to about the meaning and history of the flag, and why it might not feel great for LGBTQ+ people to have the flag used to get likes. There are many many people bullied, tortured, beaten, and killed because of who they are, and the flag represents pride in the face of oppression. A battle to exist that is far from being won. Sometimes trivializing these symbols can be extremely painful. I think it’s important for young people who may not be aware of this to be educated about it. It may not be her reality but trust me it is the reality for many, all over the world.
